UH women win three track and field events

The University of Hawai'i women opened the 2006 track and field season with three individual wins, five seconds and four thirds at the Northridge Spring Break Open at Northridge, Calif.
Ashley Monfort won the 400-meters in 57.68 seconds, Mallory Gilbert captured the high jump (5 feet, 7 inches) and Patricia Gauthier took the pole vault (12 feet, 4 inches).
UH's Emily Sheppard finished second in the high jump (5-3), while in the pole vault, Jessica Trujillo was second (11-6) and Samantha Weaver third (11-0).
BASEBALL
UHH GAME POSTPONED
Last night's game between the University of Hawai'i-Hilo and Western Illinois at Wong Stadium in Hilo was postponed because of rain.
The game will be made up today as part of a doubleheader at Wong Stadium.
The first game starts at 3 p.m., with the second game to follow.
FOOTBALL
TRYOUTS FOR CFL TEAM
The Canadian Football League's Ottawa Renegades will hold a combine-type workout for prospective players at 8 a.m. April 1 at the University of Hawai'i practice fields.
A cash-only fee of $90 is required, and players will be tested in the 40-yard dash, shuttle run and one-on-one position drills. Interested free agents should visit the team's Web site at www.ottawarenegades.net

SAILING
PEGASUS 52 SECOND
Pegasus 52, owned by Ho-nolulu's Philippe Kahn, took second at the Rolex TP52 Global Championship last week off the coast of Miami.
The boat fell by just 1.25 points to champion Patches, owned by Ireland's Eamon Conneely. Pegasus took a 0.75-point lead into the final two races. Patches won the next-to-last race, with Pegasus second, to pull ahead by 0.25. The Irish boat clinched the championship with a second-place finish in the final race.
SOFTBALL
HAWAI'I-HILO SWEEPS
The University of Hawai'i- Hilo beat Vanguard (Calif.), 6-0 and 2-0, yesterday at Honoka'a Regional Park.
Sarah Steele (2-2) scattered four hits over five innings and Sarah Weisskopf gave up a hit in one inning of relief for UHH.
In the second game, Leo Sing Chow (3-5) pitched a three-hitter and also had two hits.
The Vulcans improve to 10-9. Vanguard fell to 14-10.
