Computers, cash stolen at City Hall

Honolulu police are investigating a break-in at City Hall on Sunday evening during which computers and cash were stolen.
City spokesman Bill Brennan said four computers and petty cash, used for postage and other small office purchases, were taken from the first-floor offices of the city corporation counsel's office. In addition, several desks were ransacked in the city's civil attorney office area.
Brennan said the computers were used for basic office work, such as e-mail, Internet access and word processing.
"There was no sensitive or confidential information on those computers," Brennan said. "They did not contain sensitive documents."
Neither Brennan nor police estimated the dollar value of the loss yesterday.
Brennan said city employees searched the area, on the Punchbowl Street side of the building, to check for other missing items, but nothing else was reported stolen as of yesterday afternoon.
Police said the burglary occurred between 8:30 and 9:25 p.m. Sunday.
In a similar incident, computer equipment was stolen during a July 2005 break-in — also on the Punchbowl Street side of Honolulu Hale — from first-floor offices of the city clerk and third-floor offices of the Customer Services Department.
No arrests have been made in either case. Police were not available to comment on whether they suspect a link between Sunday's burglary and the July break-in.
Brennan said Mayor Mufi Hannemann asked for a review of the security at Honolulu Hale after the July burglary. As a result, Brennan said, officials ordered removal of some landscaping and shrubbery close to the building and changed some window latches and locks.
