A series of seemingly unrelated events collided to turn UCLA assistant coach Mike Sealy into the new Rainbow Wahine associate volleyball coach.

Hawai'i head coach Dave Shoji announced Sealy's hiring yesterday after a search that drew "dozens" of candidates, many Division I head coaches.

Sealy, 35, was the 1993 national player of the year when he set the Bruins to their 14th NCAA title. He played professionally 10 years and "first retired" in 2000. Walking into Stan Sheriff Center as an assistant and hearing the crowd gave him "goose bumps" and convinced him to keep playing.

He returned to assist Al Scates in 2002 and was also second assistant for the Bruin women this past season. Shoji describes Sealy as "more analytical" and less "fiery" than former associate Charlie Wade — now the Pacific head coach. He is hoping Sealy will bring the best elements of the men's game to his program.

"I thought he would give us a fresh and different approach to the game," Shoji said. "Almost all the other candidates were women's coaches coming from the game the way I had seen it."

Sealy recruited Shoji's son, Kawika. He left an indelible impression with his "refreshing" presentation and thoroughness.

Sealy's impression of Hawai'i goes beyond volleyball. Wife Romey lived on the North Shore until first grade. Her mother, Cindy Biggers, lives on Maui and dances in Keali'i Reichel's halau.

Shoji is also upgrading Kari Ambrozich to associate. "Kari has done such a tremendous job for me," Shoji said. "She has been here eight years and quietly gone about taking on a whole lot of responsibilities. She has been a very good and loyal coach. She needed to be rewarded. Now is the perfect time."
