Local gymnasts medal at regionals displaying the hardware

Beth Arnoult-Ritthaler, of Pa'ia, Maui, and her son, Jacques, show off Arnoult-Ritthaler's hardware that the wheelchair tennis player won at the Polish Open, a clay-court tournament in Plock, Poland, that finished Sunday. In the women's singles championship, Arnoult-Ritthaler, the No. 2 seed, fell to top-seeded Agnieszka Bartczak of Poland, 6-4, 6-1. Arnoult-Ritthaler then teamed with Bartczak to win the women's doubles, winning the round-robin event by sweeping their three matches.

Five athletes from Hawai'i won medals at the USA Gymnastics Trampoline-Tumbling Region 2 Championships in Sacramento, Calif., on June 3.

The medalists were:

  • Kylie Northrop, age 6, (competing in the 7-8 age group), was sixth in tumbling (Level 5), fourth in double mini-tramp (Level 5), and fourth in trampoline (Level 5).

  • Annika Northrop, age 9 (competing in the 9-10 age group), was first in tumbling (Level 6), fourth in double mini-tramp (Level 8), and third in trampoline (Level 9).

  • Kelsen Onigama, age 11 (competing in the 11-12 age group), was first in trampoline (Level 10), first in double mini-tramp (Level 10), and first in synchronized trampoline (Level 10) with partner Jake Jacobson from American Powerhouse in Sacramento.

  • Kristie Kawazoe, age 13 (competing in the 13-14 age group), was first in trampoline (Level 10), second in double mini-tramp (Level 10), and fifth in tumbling (Level 6).

  • Kira Vercruyssen, 19, (competing in the 17-plus age group), was third in double mini-tramp (Level 10) and second in trampoline (Level 10).

    The competition featured athletes from Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawai'i, Nevada and New Mexico.

    Onigama and Kawazoe will compete at nationals in Chicago in July.

    Today and tomorrow, Onigama and Vercruyssen will join Hawai'i teammates Spencer Madanay, a previous regional champion, and three elite athletes on the U.S. National Team (Nani Vercruyssen, Spencer Dupio and Matt Moniz) to compete in the USA-Gymnastics Elite Challenge in Las Vegas.

    18 TEAMS HEADED TO NATIONAL TOURNEY

    Hawai'i will be well represented at the U.S. Youth National Soccer National Championship Series with 18 teams, including nine Honolulu Soccer Club Bulls teams, vying for a national crown.

    The national tournament will be June 19 to 25 in Boise, Idaho.

    Fifteen teams qualified by winning their age group at the Hawai'i State Cup Championships, and three others received wild-card entries.

    The girls teams are:

    HSC Bulls 94G (12-under, 8-on-8); Ka'oi Express (12-under); Leahi 93 Premier (13-under); HSC Bulls 92G (14-under); Leahi 91 Premier (15-under); Leahi 90 Premier (16-under); Leahi 89 Premier (17-under); and HSC Bulls 88G and HSC Bulls 94B (18-under).

    The boys teams are:

    Hawai'i Rush B93 (13-under); HSC Bulls 92B (14-under); Hawai'i Rush B 91 Nike (15-under); Kailua Football Club (16-under); Real Copa 89 (17-under); and HSC Bulls 88B (18-under).

    The three wild-card teams are:

    HSC Bulls 93G (13-under girls); HSC Bulls 89G (17-under girls); and HSC Bulls 91B (15-under boys).
