CANE HAUL BRIDGE TO BE LOAD TESTED

The Wailua cane haul bridge on Kaua'i will be closed for three consecutive weekends beginning tomorrow for load testing work. The bridge will be closed from 7 a.m. tomorrow to 8 p.m. Sunday.

A spokesman for KSF Inc., the structural engineering company hired by the county to oversee the load test, said the testing process involves simulating extra weight that would be placed on the bridge and taking measurements and readings. The work will be done 10 tons at a time in three different locations on the bridge, said Calvin Miyahara of KSF.

Kaua'i Builders has been subcontracted to do the load testing.

"If the cane haul bridge can take the load, we are looking at constructing an Acro-bridge on top of it, turning it into a two-lane roadway and adding a segment of the 16-mile bike and pedestrian path alongside it," said Darell Young of the state Transportation Department's Highways Division.

Another option being considered is building a separate bridge between the two existing bridges to provide a second northbound lane.

The load testing is the first phase of the cane haul bridge project to provide an additional lane across the Wailua River. The next step will be to select a bridge design.
