Man hurt trying to stop van theft

A 50-year-old man was injured yesterday while trying to prevent the theft of his van from the parking lot of Honolulu Community College.
The 2:15 p.m. incident at 455 Kokea St. was being investigated as an attempted murder, Kalihi police district Maj. Kurt Kendro said.
The injured man suffered head and leg injuries after being dragged while hanging on to the driver's-side door of the van. He was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical but stable condition and was upgraded to serious condition.
While trying to flee in the van, the thief allegedly hit the victim and then attempted to get him off the door by driving past a guardrail piling.
The thief drove off in the van and was still at large yesterday afternoon, Kendro said.

HOME FIRE DELIBERATELY SET
Officials said someone deliberately started a pre-dawn fire that destroyed a house in Makakilo yesterday.
Six people escaped unharmed from the 4:39 a.m. fire at 92-738 Nohopa'a St. Damage was estimated at $300,000 to the house and $100,000 to its contents, Fire Department spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada said.
A 15-year-old girl, whose room was closest to the carport, where the fire started, alerted others after hearing "crackling" noises, Tejada said. The Red Cross was helping the residents, two women and four girls ages 2 to 17.

1-CAR CRASH LEAVES MAN CRITICAL
A 33-year-old Waimea man was in critical but stable condition after a single-car crash yesterday on Kaumuali'i Highway, 17 miles west of Hanapepe.
No other injuries were reported. Police said the driver veered off the road and struck a utility pole head on. He was transported to Kaua'i Veterans Memorial Hospital and was later flown to The Queen's Medical Center.

BOOK SALE TO BENEFIT LIBRARY
The Friends of the 'Aina Haina Library will hold an annual four-day book sale tomorrow through Saturday at 'Aina Haina Public Library, in the meeting room.
The book sale, which will feature a variety of books, videos, DVDs, CDs, records and audio tapes, will run 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Prices starting at $2 for hardcover books and $1 for paperbacks will be reduced each day. The popular "Dollar-a-Bag" bargain will be on Saturday during the last hour of the sale.
Proceeds from the sale benefit the 'Aina Haina library. For more information, call the library at 377-2456.

BODY FOUND IN OCEAN OFF S. POINT
The body of a 71-year-old Na'alehu man was found at about 11:15 a.m. yesterday floating in the ocean at the base of the cliffs at South Point.
People told firefighters that the man, described as a fisherman wearing a wet suit, entered the water about 10:45 a.m. His body was seen about a half-hour later floating face-down below a 30-foot ledge at South Point Mooring, firefighters said.
Firefighters recovered the body. He was pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital.

GET INFORMATION ABOUT TERMITES
The University of Hawai'i is offering seminars for residents to learn more about termites, such as identification and biology of the wood-munching insect and tips on how to prevent and control them.
The two-hour seminars, offered by the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, will be June 20 at Moanalua High School, June 29 at Mililani High School, and July 11 at Windward Community College. Each seminar is at 6:30 p.m.
