Q. I'm in the process of screening resumes for a job opening. Can you suggest interviewing techniques to finding the right candidate?
A. Finding the right employee can seem difficult. However, all you need are a set of guidelines to point you in the right direction. Pointers to find the right replacement:
Determine what qualifications you want, so when you meet with candidates, you'll know what you're looking for.
Review resumes before interviewing. Go into interviews with a set of questions in mind on the content of resumes. Interviewees can clarify any discrepancies, gaps in time or any other questions you may have.
Listen attentively. Give candidates your undivided attention, maintain eye contact and follow up with additional questions. The more candidates talk, the more personality traits will be revealed.
Remember the legalities of interviewing. Do not ask questions about applicants' age, country of origin, marital status or religion.
Explain to candidates where you are in the interviewing process and when a decision may be made.
Wrap it up. Briefly review the benefits of the job, see if they have any questions, and thank candidates for the time you have spent together.
