HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Pump failure puts sewage into drain

Advertiser Staff

A sewage pump station failure on Tuesday caused nearly 25,000 gallons of wastewater to flow out from a manhole at the Hawaiian Homes pump station at Waiehu Beach Road and Kukona Place, county officials said yesterday.

The sewage entered a storm drain, and the Department of Health was notified to determine if the spill reached the ocean.

Staff from the Department of Public Works and Environmental Management Wastewater Division repaired the problem, and wastewater in the storm drain was removed and the area disinfected, county officials said.

NO FOUL PLAY SEEN IN DEATH OFF PA'IA

An autopsy performed yesterday on a 38-year-old man whose body was found floating in the ocean off Pa'ia did not find indications of foul play, and the cause of death has yet to be determined, police said.

Matthew Atwood of Lahaina was reported missing by his wife about 7:35 p.m. Monday, said police Lt. Glenn Cuomo. Atwood's nude body was spotted at about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday by a group of teenage girls at a cove north of Baldwin Beach Park that is known for nude sunbathing. Cuomo said Atwood's car was parked nearby.

He was a manager at the Maui Muscle Sports Club fitness center and gym in Kahana.

Cuomo said detectives are awaiting test results from the autopsy to tell them how the man died.

MIKE PETERS PUTS HAT IN HOUSE RACE

Mike Peters, a substitute teacher and hotel worker, said yesterday he will run in the Republican primary in state House District 23 in Waikiki, Ala Moana and Kaka'ako.

Peters, who serves on the Waikiki Neighborhood Board, will face Rep. Anne Stevens, who was appointed by Gov. Linda Lingle in January to replace Galen Fox. Fox resigned last year after being convicted of a federal misdemeanor sex crime.

"I can't continue to sit by while current legislators lack drive, leadership, and concern for our community," Peters said in a statement.

Peters has worked at the state Capitol as a legislative aide to Rep. William Stonebraker, R-17th (Hawai'i Kai, Kalama Valley), and Rep. Mark Moses, R-40th (Makakilo, Kapolei, Royal Kunia).

Police were looking for two men who robbed several people at gunpoint Tuesday night in a convenience store parking lot in Kapolei.
