Entries are open for several Hawai'i State Women's Golf Association events, including the final two majors of the year — HSWGA Match Play and HSWGA Stroke Play.

Match play is Monday to Wednesday at O'ahu Country Club. HSWGA members with a handicap index of 14.9 or less are eligible. Cyd Okino, 12, will defend her title. She became the youngest match play champion — breaking Stephanie Kono's record — last year when she outlasted Shelcie Takenouchi, 1-up.

The field also includes 2003 State High School champion Kira-Ann Murashige, and former finalists Desiree Ting and Tracy Kashiwabara-Ayabe. OCC member Alina Ching is the newest 12-year-old to challenge for the year's second major. Her brother Alex won the HSJGA boys' championship Tuesday.

Qualifying begins at 8 a.m. on Monday with the first round that afternoon. The second round is 6:45 a.m. on Tuesday followed by the semifinals. The final is scheduled for 8 a.m. Wednesday. For entry information, call Wendy Smith, 293-8753.

The HSWGA Stroke Play Championship is July 25 to 27 at Mid-Pacific Country Club. It is open to golfers with a handicap index of 9.4 or less. Mari Chun won last year's title by 14 shots at 2-under 214. Stephanie Kono set the tournament record in 2003 with a 212 total.

The 52nd annual Maui Women's Golf Invitational is limited to the first 72 entries received. It will be Aug. 5 at Pukalani Country Club and Aug. 6 at Maui Country Club.

The tournament is open to all female golfers 18 and older, with a July index of 33.5 or less. For more information, call 877-5433 or 244-4195 on Maui.

Entry deadline for the USGA Senior Women's qualifier is Aug. 16. The local qualifier is Sept. 7 at Honolulu Country Club. Deadline for the USGA Women's Mid-Amateur is Aug. 23. It will be Sept. 16 at Maui Dunes. Applications and information are available at usga.org.

The Hawai'i State Women's Golf Foundation will donate $600 to help defray expenses for Mainland qualifiers.

GREENLEAF ON TEAR IN CALLAWAY JUNIOR SERIES

Robert Greenleaf's victory in the boys 13-14 age division at Tuesday's King Auto Group Hawai'i State Junior Championships was his second straight. Greenleaf, an incoming freshman at Seabury Hall on Maui, captured the fifth stop on the Callaway Golf PGA Junior Series the previous Tuesday at Harvard, Mass.

Greenleaf, 14, won his age division at Shaker Hills Golf Club by eight. His even-par 144 total was the best of any age division. It was Greenleaf's fifth straight Junior Series event. He had two thirds, a fourth and a 14th in his previous starts.

Robert's father Bill is a golf professional at The Dunes at Maui Lani. Robert took up the game at age 11.

BALL MARKERS TO BENEFIT HSJGA ON SALE NOW

As part of "Junior Golf Month" in Hawai'i, the HSJGA will have special ball markers on sale at participating golf courses and businesses in July. Sales will raise funds for the HSJGA and other Hawai'i junior programs.

Price of the marker is $5, with proceeds going to the HSJGA and a local junior golf program designated by the supporter.

MANN TO OFFER SEMINAR ON MENTAL ASPECTS

Golfers can learn how to "Master the Mental Game of Golf" at a workshop presented by Ron Mann at the Princeville Golf Courses on Kaua'i. The one-day workshop will be July 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Prince Course.

The program will cover such topics as how to control negative thinking and avoid breakdowns that affect your game, how to maintain concentration, how to improve your pre-shot routine and course management, keys to lowering your score, visualization techniques and the use of hatha yoga for greater flexibility.
