A strong first half was all the Mililani girls soccer team needed to advance to its eighth straight O'ahu Interscholastic Association semifinal game.

The Trojans scored three first-half goals in a 4-1 victory over Castle in an OIA quarterfinal game last night at Moanalua in muddy and slippery field conditions.

"In a game like this, it was important to have the lead going into the half," Mililani coach Ray Akiona said of the conditions. "Anything can happen with a field like this. (We) adjusted to the field conditions pretty well. I told them to stay out of the middle (where the water was pooling)."

Mililani (9-1-1), the West No. 2 seed, plays Moanalua (9-1-1) in one semifinal at 5:15 p.m. at Kapolei Tuesday. Kalani (7-2-3) and Pearl City (10-0-1) play in the other semifinal at 7.

All four have qualified for the state tournament. Castle (6-2-4), the No. 3 East team, fell into the consolation round and has a shot at receiving the OIA's fifth state tournament berth if it wins its next two games.

Sophomore midfielder Shelyce Ichimura had two goals and freshman forward Chelsey Goo and junior midfielder Stephanie Yoro also scored for the Trojans yesterday.

"We play more a direct style, hoping to keep them on their defensive half of the field," said Akiona, who added it was important to make the Knights play defensively because of their scoring prowess.

Goo scored first in the 14th minute on a free kick by junior midfielder Natalie Wong, whose shot from the 18-yard line initially bounced off the wall. Wong chased down the ball and shot it again and the Castle goalkeeper couldn't hold on to the ball. Goo followed Wong's shot and put the rebound into the goal.

Ichimura scored two minutes later when Goo crossed the ball from the left side and several Trojans attempted shots, but the ball bounced in front of the goal before Ichimura finished the play.

"Everybody was taking shots, and I happened to stick my leg out and hit the ball," Ichimura said.

Yoro scored four minutes before halftime on a pass from Wong. Yoro beat a defender before launching a 35-yard shot that slid under the crossbar.

Ichimura's second goal made it 4-0 six minutes into the second half on a pass from sophomore midfielder Allison Kagawa.

"When we started the second half, our coach said to get an early goal to get the momentum back," Ichimura said.

Castle sophomore Aili MacDonald scored in the 68th minute on a shot that bounced over the Mililani goalkeeper's head.

Kalani 1, Kaiser 0: Sophomore midfielder Erin Arakaki scored as the East's sixth-seeded Falcons upset East No. 2 Kaiser at Pearl City, putting Kalani into the state tournament for the first time in at least a decade.

Pearl City 2, Kalaheo 1: Senior midfielder Christina Hee scored two goals to send the West champion Chargers to their seventh straight OIA semifinal game. Senior forward Johnna Frantzen scored for East No. 4 Kalaheo.

Moanalua 1, Kailua 0: Senior forward Tanya Nojiri scored in the 51st minute when she juked a defender and took a low shot that slid under the goalkeeper. Moanalua was the East's top seed and Kailua was its fifth.
