JAN. 20-21, 27-28

Two weekends of Chinatown festivities will ring in the Year of the Dog:

  • The Chinese New Year Festival, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Jan. 20-21 at the Chinatown Cultural Plaza, features lion dance blessings and fireworks, food, exhibits and demonstrations.

  • The Honolulu Centennial Night in Chinatown, 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Jan. 21, along Maunakea Street (closed to vehicles), is a daylong affair that includes a parade at 4 p.m., entertainment and more than 30 concessions of food and arts and crafts.

  • The 57th annual Narcissus Festival Chinatown Open House, 5-10 p.m. Jan. 27-28, offers lion dances, the newly crowned Narcissus queen and festival of food, arts and crafts and entertainment.

    Year of the Dog ribbons ($5 donation), left, are available at some Chinese restaurants and jewelry stores, and entitle wearers to 10 percent discounts at those establishments.

    DANCE: JAN. 21-22

    Dr. Schaffer and Mr. Stern Dance Ensemble celebrates 17 years with the production "Writing in the Sky." Featuring Karl Schaffer and Erik Stern, right, along with Hawai'i's Gregg Lizenbery, the ensemble brings math centerstage for an imaginative and entertaining evening. Stern and Schaffer's 1990 show "Two Guys Dancing About Math" has been performed more than 500 times. Tickets are $15-$25.

    CONCERT: JAN. 28

    Considered the "Irish music dream team" by Folk Roots magazine, the contemporary Celtic-folk band Lœnasa brings its inventive acoustic sounds to celebrate the release of its new album "Sé" (pronounced shay). The group is named for the festival that honors the Irish god Lugh, patron of the arts. Tickets are $23 general, $19 students, seniors and military.

    CONCERT: JAN. 29

    "Diva on the Verge," starring opera star Julia Migenes, combines vocal artistry and comedy in a one-woman show created for opera lovers and those who always wondered about opera but were afraid to ask. Admission is $50 (a portion is tax-deductible because the show is a benefit for Paliku Theatre).

    STAGE: FEB. 3-19

    The romantic comedy "Enchanted April" takes center stage next month at the Diamond Head Theatre. The play takes place in 1922, when two married British women holiday in Italy with an elderly spinster and a jaded young lady. Randl Ask directs. Tickets are $12-$42.

    The third all-ages Metalfest metal and hardcore music festival gets things rocking in February. The bash features the sounds of 8mm Overdose, below, along with The Quintessentials, DeBauch, Augustine, The Insurgents, Dark Harvest, Midnight Ablaze, Laissez Faire, Pacifica, Shadows of Sanctity, Haole Rot, The Aftermath, Dagra, Floodgate and Critical Mass. Admission is $8.

    Flash back to the '70s at The '70s Nightclub Reunion II. The first concert featured the grooves of Greenwood, New Experience and Power Point; this time, Aura and Phase VII join the disco party, too. Frank B. Shaner emcees. Tickets are $30, which includes a nachos bar.

    Marley Fest '06 pays tribute to reggae legend Bob Marley with more than 25 bands and DJs scheduled to perform on four stages. The party includes entertainment by Gregory Isaacs, left, and the Live Wyaa Band, The Ionz, Irie Souls, Dubkonscious, Ooklah the Moc, B.E.T., Hot Rain, Bamboo and Red Degree. Tickets are $15 presale, for 18 and older.

    OPERA: FEB. 10, 12 AND 14

    Hawaii Opera Theatre opens its Winter Grand Opera Season 2006 with the tragedy "Rigoletto" by Giuseppe Verdi. John Packard plays Rigoletto, with Olga Makarina as Gilda and Jorge Yanez Lopes as the Duke of Mantua. Henry Akina directs. English subtitles will be projected above the stage. Tickets are $29-$100.

    Kennedy Theatre offers the American premiere of "Women Generals of the Yang Family," a Chinese opera (jingju) in English. The cast of student actors has trained with master teachers from China since August for their roles in this historical drama.
