LEI POSTER CONTEST
WINNER WILL BE USED FOR MEMORIAL DAY DRIVE
Entries are being accepted for Honolulu's annual "Sew a Lei for Memorial Day" poster contest. The contest is open to all Hawai'i public, private and homeschooled students in all grades.
The winning poster will be used to advertise for lei donations to decorate graves at the National Cemetery of the Pacific and at all state veterans cemeteries on Memorial Day, May 29.
First-, second- and third-place winners will be selected in three categories — grades K to 4, 5 to 8, and 9 to 12.
Public schools may submit entries through the state Department of Education's Communication Branch. Private and homeschool entries should be submitted by March 6 to the city's Department of Parks and Recreation Memorial Day Service Committee.

ELITE AND EXPENSIVE
SOME HIGH SCHOOLS COST $30,000+ IN N.Y.
New York parents sending their kids to some of the city's elite high schools this fall will pay more than $30,000 for the first time — more than it costs for a year at Harvard.
Riverdale Country School raised tuition 5.8 percent to $31,200. Trinity School in Manhattan set high school tuition at $30,170, a 6.2 percent increase; kindergarten will cost $28,770, a 6.9 percent rise.
New York City private schools are the nation's most expensive, said Myra McGovern, a spokeswoman for the National Association of Independent Schools. Here are some other facts about New York private schools:
Big surge: In the past decade, 12th-grade tuition is up 32.3 percent to average $27,600.
Comparison: National average of $16,970 for high school.
Ahead: Some school officials estimate annual tuition may reach $50,000 by 2015.
