The 50th Annual Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Boys Basketball Tournament is off to a crazy start, with three of four first-round games last night going down to the final shot or overtime.
When the dust settled, Campbell upset Saint Louis, 64-63; defending state runner-up Kahuku survived Honoka'a, 67-63, in overtime and Kamehameha edged Lahainaluna, 51-49.
Only Kalaheo had an easy time, cruising past Waimea, 93-36.
Tonight's quarterfinals at Radford's James Alegre Gym feature Kahuku against No. 4 seed Baldwin at 6, followed by Kalaheo vs. No. 1 seed Iolani at 8. At McKinley's Student Council Gym, Kamehameha faces its sister school from the Big Island, No. 3 Kamehameha-Hawai'i, at 6 followed by Campbell against O'ahu Interscholastic Association rival and No. 2 seed Kaimuki at 8.
The games at McKinley will be televised live statewide on OC-16.
In last night's craziest game, Campbell — which was coming off a 64-33 loss to Kalaheo in the OIA third-place game — overcame a 28-11 second-period deficit to rally past the Crusaders, who finished third in the highly competitive Interscholastic League of Honolulu.
Campbell sophomore Mike Makinano, a 5-foot-11 sophomore who transferred back to the school after spending the fall semester in Brentwood, Calif., scored a game-high 24 points as the Sabers won a high-intensity, back-and-forth track meet.
"I came home not knowing what the basketball team would be like," Makinano said. "It feels good just to be in the state tournament."
Things looked gloomy for Campbell (12-3) in the first half last night, when Saint Louis (10-5) went on a 20-2 run spanning the end of the first period through half way into the second for a 28-11 lead.
But Ryan Hayes swished a 3-pointer with 3:14 remaining to start the Sabers' comeback, and by the end of the half Campbell cut the Crusaders' advantage to 29-23.
"Our shot selection was very poor when we had that (28-11) lead," Saint Louis coach Delbert Tengan said. "And our transition defense was poor, too. We gave up way too many layups and easy baskets."
Makinano scored 13 points in the third period and completed the comeback when his layup tied the score at 42 with five seconds remaining.
"I felt if we continued to run, things would start to fall for us," Campbell coach Bob Samson said. "And on defense, our kids really stepped it up. We played a matchup zone, even though we usually play man-to-man. But the key was to continue to keep the pace at our pace. I felt good about how we matched up."
Campbell went up 54-47 with 5:01 left in the game, but the Crusaders rallied to tie it 61-61 on Cole Shidaki's jumper with 56 seconds remaining. Sabers sophomore Dexter Vanhook then was fouled while making a short, double-pump bank shot with 26 ticks left and sank the free throw to make it 64-61.
Scott Smith made a bank shot off a rebound with nine ticks left and Campbell then missed a free throw. But the Crusaders' last-second shot from in the key missed as time expired.
