Sun Devils sink UH in water polo

Rowie Webster scored three goals as No. 8 Arizona State defeated No. 5 Hawai'i, 8-7, yesterday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match at Tempe, Ariz.
Webster's goal late in the second period gave the Sun Devils a 5-4 lead that they would not relinquish.
Arizona State (6-2 overall, 1-0 MPSF) also beat Hawai'i (3-4, 1-2) earlier in the season at the Stanford Invitational.
All-American lefke Van Belkum scored three goals and Kelly Mason had two to lead the Rainbow Wahine. Mason's goal with 2:05 to play in the fourth period closed UH's deficit to 8-7, but ASU held on to post the victory at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
Hawai'i plays at San Diego State tomorrow in another MPSF match.

SECOND SEED FALLS
Blake Wardman, of San Clemente, Calif., defeated second-seeded Stephen Stege, of Los Gatos, Calif, 6-1, 4-0 (retired due to illness), yesterday in the boys' 18 semifinals of the USTA National Open at the Central O'ahu Regional Park courts.
Christopher Madden, of Lotus, Calif., beat Calvin Bennett, of Sandy, Utah, 6-1, 6-3, in the other semifinal.
In the girls' 18 semifinals, top-seeded Lena Litvak, of Bronx, N.Y., beat Tania Mahtani, of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., 7-5, 6-2, and seventh-seeded Alison Ramos, of Carson, Calif., defeated Jordaan Sanford, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., 6-1, 7-5.
Competition continues today, starting at 9 a.m.

HPU PLAYERS HONORED
Hawai'i Pacific infielder Nicole Kalakau and pitcher Dayna Berry were named Pacific West Conference Co-Players of the Week.
Kalakau, a sophomore from Waimanalo, batted 5 for 13 (.385), with three home runs and eight RBIs, as HPU swept Brigham Young-Hawai'i and Cal-State Stanislaus.
Berry, a sophomore from Mission Viejo, Calif., earned three victories, including a one-hitter against BYUH and a four-hit shutout against Cal-State Stanislaus. In 14 innings, she gave up five hits and one unearned run with eight strikeouts and two walks.
