Hawai'i's Filipino community is continuing fundraising efforts to help victims of the landslide in the southern Leyte region of the Philippines.
State Rep. Felipe "Jun" Abinsay, D-29th (Kalihi, Sand Island), said at least three fundraisers are being planned.
A meeting of the Hawai'i International Relief Organization, scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Philippine Consulate on Pali Highway, will look at what more can be done.
"Our goal is $50,000," Abinsay said.
As of yesterday, about $17,500 had been raised and pledged locally, said Toy Arre Jr., executive director of the Filipino Community Center in Waipahu.
The bulk of that money was raised during a gathering at the Fil-Com Center Sunday that featured a live broadcast by radio station KNDI-AM.
KNDI owner Leona Jona reported more calls than usual, mostly from listeners wanting to know where to send money or how else they can help.
Two events are planned for Sunday. A $25-a-person buffet lunch fundraiser will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the Loulen Restaurant on North King Street in Kalihi, Abinsay said.
That night, the Oahu Filipino Community Council is sponsoring a gathering at Rumours nightclub in the Ala Moana Hotel. For $25, attendees can enjoy heavy pupu and dancing from 6 to 11 p.m.
The Cebuano Association of Hawai'i is planning a fundraiser for the second weekend of March, Abinsay said.
