HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Forum on O'ahu's internment camp

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Japanese American Citizens League's annual Day of Remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the Architecture Auditorium at the University of Hawai'i. The meeting will focus on the little known internment camp in Honouliuli Gulch in West O'ahu where local Japanese-Americans and others were detained during World War II.

The free event will feature speakers who will relate what their families experienced during the war years.

The camp held U.S. citizens of Japanese, German and Italian descent as well as nationals from all three countries. At one time, Japanese prisoners of war also were kept at the 160-acre camp.

The event is co-sponsored by the UH Office of Multicultural Student Services, the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i, the Hawai'i Chapter of the NAACP and the Martin Luther King Coalition of Hawai'i.
