Looking for something new to spruce up your garden? Tomorrow is the Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden's plant sale, where you can let some exciting plants follow you home and help support the Honolulu botanical gardens. Head to the garden's nursery.
People can't wait to get their green hands on the Aka-tsuki hybrid gingers, grown by the Honolulu botanical gardens' nursery volunteers. These plants include three varieties of hybrid dwarf gingers developed in Japan. The low-growing plants (they top out at 18 inches) are fragrant and will produce well even in a 12-inch pot. Beni-no-kagayaki (Shining Red) produces warm, coral-colored flowers. Shin-seiki (New Century) has large, creamy-white flowers with a yellow center, while Syunko (Spring Light) bears pure white blossoms with a yellow center.
At our Dec. 3 Nutcracker Sweet event, the saplings of spice, nut and chocolate trees sold out. But they're back — grow your own nutmeg, clove, cacao, cinnamon and cashews. And for the first time, Brazil nut trees will be offered. The nuts are delicious.
If a plant is sold out, volunteers will take orders and propagate one or more for you.
