Turtle Bay Resort is appearing on television as the home of "Big Break V: Hawai'i," the fifth installment of the Golf Channel Reality Series. The series, filmed on the North Shore last year, began Tuesday and continues each Tuesday through May 9.

A cast of 11 women competes in the second all-female version of the series. "Big Break III: Ladies Only" champion Danielle Amiée gained national attention last year with the two LPGA exemptions she won on the show.

The Hawai'i show featured a new twist, with all 11 contestants facing elimination the first day. After arriving here, the golfers discovered they needed to play their way on to the show and one was sent home — Jo D. Duncan, a teaching professional from St. Louis.

The show's concept pits golfers against each other in challenges that test physical skills and mental toughness. One golfer is eliminated each week. The last golfer is awarded her "Big Break."

The winner's prize package includes an exemption to the 2006 Safeway Classic; a Bridgestone Golf equipment contract; a $10,000 cash and golf merchandise prize from Golfsmith; a Chrysler Crossfire Roadster; and a training package to include professional instruction from Golf Channel troubleshooter Dean Reinmuth, fitness training from Katherine Roberts and mental coaching from Dr. Gio Valiente. The winner also gets exemptions, entry fees and travel expenses for 12 Futures Tour events in 2006.

Candidates come from the U.S., Sweden and Australia and include San Francisco's Divina Delasin, the sister of Turtle Bay representative Dorothy Delasin. Divina dropped out of high school and once held three jobs to support family finances and the fledgling career of her sister.

Contestants will compete in three types of challenges during Big Break V:

  • The Mulligan Challenge, where the winning golfer is awarded an extra shot during the Immunity Challenge;

  • The Immunity Challenge tests players' shot control, and top-performing players are awarded a one-show exemption from elimination;

  • The Elimination Challenge, where the poorest performer is eliminated from the show.
