TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE
"Jim Gaffigan: Beyond the Pale," 5 and 9 p.m., Comedy Central. In his quiet way, Jim Gaffigan might be one of the cleverest stand-up comedians. He brings a fresh perspective to everyday subjects. To Gaffigan, holiday customs seem like something guys would do when drunk. When a wife demands to know why there's a tree in the living room, the guy responds, "for Jesus?" When she's skeptical about eggs for Easter, he responds: "OK, we'll hide them. A bunny will be involved."
"Falling in Love With the Girl Next Door," 7, 9, and 11 p.m., Hallmark Channel. Few TV movies have looked as bright and inviting as this one. Set amid the beauty of California's Catalina Island, it has an appealing romantic couple, played by Ken Marino and Crystal Allen. The show looks so good that we barely manage to grumble about the predictable plot. The moms (Patty Duke and Shelley Long) meddle and feud, while the dads (Patrick Duffy and Bruce Boxleitner) keep a dad-like distance.
OF NOTE
"Casino" (1995), 5, 9 p.m., Bravo. Martin Scorsese directed this tough mob film, with Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Sharon Stone and James Woods.
"Miss Congeniality" (2000), 6 p.m., TBS. This pleasant comedy gets repeated a lot. It has Sandra Bullock as a clumsy FBI agent who goes undercover at a beauty pageant. There are some dandy supporting gigs for Candice Bergen, William Shatner and Michael Caine.
"Law & Order: Criminal Intent," 7 p.m., NBC. A rerun of the story that linked the two detective teams. An Iowa teen on a field trip to New York has disappeared. Suspects include the son of a prominent judge and maybe the judge himself. Working the case are Goren and Eames (Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe) and Logan and Barek (Chris Noth and Annabella Sciorra).
"Super Bowl's Greatest Commercials," 7 p.m., CBS. On Sunday, the Super Bowl will have a fresh batch of big-buck commercials. First, however, is this chance to recall those of the past, in a top-40 countdown.
"CSI: NY," 8 p.m., CBS. This rerun has Mac in a diner when a nasty shootout begins.
"Law & Order," 9 p.m., NBC. An apparent kidnapping is seen in a different light in this rerun, after the car is abandoned but the 5-year-old girl inside is missing.
"Saturday Night Live," 10:30 p.m., NBC. Steve Martin hosts, with Prince as musical guest.
