One Leeward O'ahu mom dreams of having a table and chairs so her family can eat meals together.

But, she says, her boyfriend barely makes enough for food and rent. There is never any extra money, so buying furniture is out of the question.

"My family always sits on the floor when we're eating," says the 26-year-old, who has two toddlers, ages 3 and 4. "Sometimes, we even have no more food."

The mother, who asked not to be identified, was living with family in a crowded three-bedroom apartment until about a year ago. At that time, the landlord said the family couldn't stay at the apartment, so they were forced out on the streets.

They were able to move into the Onemalu Transitional Shelter in Kalaeloa, where they shared a small bedroom. The boyfriend worked two jobs to make ends meet, while the woman watched her children.

Recently, they were able to move into a public housing complex, and they are delighted to have their own apartment. A little furniture would add a bit of comfort to their situation.

The family is asking for a small table and chairs, along with any cooking utensils and pots and pans.

The kids also need clothes. The 3-year-old boy wears a 4T, as does the 4-year-old girl. Both have asthma, which affects how often they can play outside.

The kids would love educational toys for inside play, and the mother needs help with baby items.

In addition, the couple would appreciate donated clothes. The mom wears a size 18 or 21 in pants and large shirts. The father wears a size 38 in pants.
