HPD death a reminder to thank our officers

StoryChat: Comment on this story

Honolulu Police officer Steve Favela's death is a sobering reminder that all who wear a badge risk their lives when they report for work.

It's easy to take this for granted.

Members of police departments everywhere know the special significance of an officer killed in the line of duty. When Favela is put to rest on Friday, officers from far and wide will be represented. A funeral for a fallen hero is also a tribute to those who are dedicated to this calling to protect the community.

From special to routine assignments, danger can come at any time. Since 1985, there have been 10 HPD officers killed in the line of duty. They range from other motorcycle-related deaths to an undercover officer whose identity was discovered by a drug dealer. There have been officers killed on the road while laying down traffic flares or issuing tickets.

On Nov. 21, Favela escorted the motorcade of the president of the United States. When he died from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident while protecting the first family, President Bush sent his condolences to Favela's wife, family and fellow officers. He wrote: "Officer Favela risked his life every day to protect the people of his community. In this time of great sadness, we give thanks for his life of service."

And we thank all those who continue to risk their lives in the name of public safety.
