13th-rated HPU loses on road

Kristin Pasley had 18 kills and 22 digs as No. 17 Central Washington defeated No. 13 Hawai'i Pacific, 30-22, 26-30, 28-30, 31-29, 15-13, yesterday in a women's volleyball match at Seattle.

Rachael Schurman added 16 kills for Central Washington (5-1).

Barbara Martin led HPU (1-6) with 24 kills and 23 digs. Chelsea Taylor added 13 kills and Charly Sampaga had 28 digs for the Sea Warriors.

In the deciding fifth game, HPU scored the first four points and led 8-5 at the changeover. The Sea Warriors moved ahead 11-7, but committed several attack errors down the stretch.

"We competed and played how we're capable of playing today," said HPU first-year coach Daryl Kapis. "As long as we keep improving every time out, we'll be ready when the conference season starts up."

HILO LOSES TWICE

Hawai'i-Hilo dropped a pair of matches in Seattle yesterday.

Nikole Thompson had 14 kills as Seattle University defeated Hilo, 30-25, 30-24, 31-29.

Melissa Mulick added 28 digs for Seattle (5-2). Taina Savage had 15 kills and 13 digs for Hilo.

Later, Alyssa Given had 18 kills and 15 digs as Seattle Pacific swept Hilo, 30-17, 30-20, 30-26.

Angie Wodrich added 15 kills for Seattle Pacific (5-1). Savage led Hilo (0-7) with 10 kills.


FOOTBALL

HULA BOWL HAS COACH

West Virginia's Rich Rodriguez, who has twice been named Big East Coach of the Year, will be on the coaching staff for the 2007 Hula Bowl, according to the Associated Press.

Rodriguez said he's never been to Hawai'i and is eager to work with top athletes and coaches.

The Hula Bowl will be played Jan. 14 at Aloha Stadium.

SOUTH AMERICA VISITS

A team from South America will play Team Bacardi USA in an international match at Hawai'i Polo Club Sunday at Mokule'ia Field.

Gates open at 11 a.m. with games beginning at 2 p.m. There will be skydiving, live music, food and cocktails.
