Wie on '60 Minutes' tonight

Advertiser Staff

Michelle Wie tees it up again, this time on "60 Minutes," which will be aired tonight at 6 p.m. on KGMB (Channel 9).

The 16-year-old Punahou School junior talks about the challenges of dealing with the media, collecting million-dollar paychecks and trying to stay grounded as a teen.

It will be Wie's second appearance on the show. She appeared two years ago.

Among Wie's responses during an interview with correspondent Steve Kroft:

  • On having a rock-star entourage, which include her parents, father BJ and mother Bo:

"Entourage? That's funny. But ... I'm very glad for all the new members of the team. It feels nice to have people that you can trust around you."

  • On the pressure to win (she's had five top-three finishes in her past seven LPGA events):

"A lot of my fans will recognize that I'm still a full-time student. I still have a lot of other things that I have to do."

  • When asked what some of those typical "things" are:

"I have a math test tomorrow that I haven't studied for at all. ..."

  • On her recently taking her driving test and barely passing:

"I got 15 points wrong. So I made it on the number. ... (I was) really nervous."

  • On her car driving skills?

"They're OK, but I kind of panic sometimes. It's not very good. I have to get better on that."

  • On dreaming about the day she will be independent, though she acknowledges that that won't happen for a while:

"I always fantasize with me being on my own, traveling by myself ... being independent. But then the reality sinks in that I never booked a hotel room by myself. I've never bought a plane ticket. I barely know how to do laundry. I can't cook. I almost cannot microwave stuff. I mean, it's pathetic!"
