UH's Sanders named WAC volleyball player of week

Hawai'i middle blocker Juliana Sanders yesterday was named Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week.
Sanders, a sophomore from Kane'ohe, hit .439 with a 3.83 kills-per-game average and 2 blocks per game in two three-game victories last week. She had 10 kills and four blocks against Utah State on Oct. 20 and 13 kills and eight blocks against San Jose State on Oct. 22.
Hawai'i yesterday moved up one spot to No. 10 in this week's Division I Coaches Top 25 poll.
Falling out of the Top 10 from its No. 7 spot was Wisconsin, which lost in five games to Michigan on Saturday and is now No. 11.
The top six teams remained the same as last week. Nebraska remained No. 1 with 55 first-place votes, followed by Washington, which received the other five first-place votes.
Penn State, Florida, Stanford and Louisville hold down spots Nos. 3 to 6.
The Rainbow Wahine play WAC matches at Nevada on Thursday and at Fresno State on Saturday. Hawai'i Pacific moves to No. 2 in D-II poll
Hawai'i Pacific moved up a spot to No. 2 in the latest women's volleyball Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll released yesterday.
Nebraska-Kearney (24-1) remained No. 1 with 865 points and 32 of the 35 first-place votes. HPU (18-1) had 827 points and two first-place votes. No. 3 Tampa got the other first-place vote and 796 points.
Brigham Young-Hawai'i (15-3) dropped one spot to No. 21 in the latest poll.
AIR RIFLERY
PEARL CITY, KAPOLEI CAPTURE OIA TITLES
Pearl City and Kapolei won the boys and girls titles, respectively, at the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Air Riflery Championships at Pearl City on Friday.
Pearl City defeated Roosevelt, 1,690 to 1,638, to win the boys' title. Kapolei defeated Pearl City, 1,709 to 1,651, for the girls' crown.
Kapolei's Tricia Warashina had the high score for the girls with 255 points. Traci Chang of Kalani was second at 253.
David Oshiro of Roosevelt led the boys with 250 points. Campbell's Charles Grande was second with 248.
PUNAHOU SWEEPS ILH VARSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Punahou swept the boys and girls varsity titles at the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Air Riflery Championships at Saint Louis School on Saturday.
The Buffanblu won the boys' title with 1,001 points. Saint Louis was second with 949. The Punahou girls scored 1,035 to finish ahead of Sacred Hearts (993).
Robert Siko of Punahou was the top shooter with 524 points, followed by teammate Scott Hong with 509.
Heather Horn of Punahou led the girls with 535 points, followed by teammate Simone Riford with 529.
Punahou's Chase Aono and Sacred Hearts' Jennifer Fonseca won individual junior varsity titles and led their respective teams to the team titles.
GOLF
SOUZA CAPTURES SECOND AMATOUR HAWAI'I EVENT
Chris Souza shot a 2-under-par 70 for a two-stroke victory in the Amatour Hawai'i's Kapolei Challenge at Kapolei Golf Course on Sunday.
Souza finished at 2-over 146. Joseph Thomas shot a 72 and was second at 148. Alvin Okada was third after a 73-152.
It was Souza's second Amatour victory this year. He won The Grind at Hawai'i Prince in May. He also won the Turtle Bay Amateur on Oct. 16.
The final Amatour tournament is Nov. 12 and 13 at Honolulu Country Club.
UH-HILO WOMEN FOURTH IN MONTEREY TOURNEY
The Hawai'i-Hilo women's golf team was in fourth place after the first round yesterday at the Cal State Monterey Bay Invitational at the Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, Calif.
UHH freshman Jayna Shimomura was tied for fifth with a 5-over 79. She is two shots behind tournament leader Candice Wagner of Western Washington.
Western Washington shot a 319 to lead the 21-team tournament. San Diego State is second at 326, followed by Chico State at 327 and UH-Hilo at 335.
ALOHA SECTION 4-BALL MATCH PLAY STARTS TODAY
The Aloha Section PGA's Golf Concepts/E-Z-Go 4-Ball Match Play Championship tees off today at Oahu Country Club.
OCC head pro Andrew Feldmann and OCC member Larry Stubblefield have won the last three titles. They defeated OCC assistant Shane Abe and Champions Tour player Dave Eichelberger, 2 and 1, in last year's final.
Qualifying and the Pro-Am start at 1 p.m. today. Feldmann and Stubblefield will be seeded first. The first round begins at 7 a.m. tomorrow, with the second round to follow at approximately 11:30 a.m. Semifinals are at 7 a.m. Thursday, with the final scheduled for noon.
A field of 15 teams will play for a purse of $9,350. The winning team gets $3,500.
WEIGHTLIFTING
FIVE WEIGHTLIFTERS SET STATE RECORDS
Five weightlifters set a total of 13 state weightlifting records at the Hawai'i Open Weightlifting Championships Saturday at Ward Warehouse.
James Moser, 15, lifted 137.5 kg (303 pounds) in the snatch and 160 kg (352 pounds) in the clean and jerk to break the 94 kg (207-pound) class records. The total of 197.5 kg (654) is also a record.
Jill Remiticado, 24,and Shannon Abac, 21, also set records in the women's divisions.
Remiticado, competing in the 53 kg (117-pound) class, did 61 kg (134) and 76 kg (167) for a total of 137 kg (301).
Abac, competing in the 75 kg (165-pound) class, set a record in the snatch with a 47.5 kg (105) lift.
Nicole Perreira, 15, and Trissana Abalos, 17, had record setting lifts for the snatch, clean and jerk, and totals. Perreira competed in the 69 kg (152-pound) weight class and Abalos in the 58 kg (128-pound) class.
