Michael Douglas in Islands for a movie role

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Columnist

NAMES 'N' FACES: Michael Douglas, here for "You, Me and Dupree" filming, apparently is a cool dude. He's playing Kate Hudson's controlling father in the Universal comedy about a newlywed couple (the groom is Matt Dillon) who allows the best man (Owen Wilson) to stay with them after the nuptials. Local extra Gerald Jury, cast as Dillon's uncle, was looking for the men's room while filming near the Ponds at Punalu'u when he encountered Douglas at his dressing van. Later, the actor-producer asked Jury, "Did you find the bathroom?" "Such a gentleman," said Jury, impressed with Douglas' sincerity and concern. ...

Loretta Ables Sayre has landed the recurring role of Auntie Mona in "Makaha Surf," The N series (new MTV teen channel), with one episode under her belt and two more coming up. For the Hawai'i Kai resident, getting to Makaha for her 5 a.m. call was a challenge. "Basically, I went from the most eastern point of the island to the most western, in the dark ... missing my turn and ending up at Ka'ena," she said. "Breathtaking scenery, but not one human being in sight." But she found her way to the shooting site. ...

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:John Langan, former g.m. of Compadres, has joined Romano's Macaroni Grill, opening Nov. 7 at Ala Moana Center. Langan was sent to Seattle for two-months' training, learning both front- and back-of-the-house procedures. When Langan returned to his hotel to watch TV — HBO's "The Sopranos" — he saw a familiar sight: a Romano's Macaroni Grill, with veal scallopine and chicken parmesan being served. ...

George Mavrothalassitis' Chef Mavro has been singled out as Honolulu's best restaurant for "conducting business," in Gourmet magazine's October issue. Besides recommending the onaga and pork dishes, Gourmet heralded Mavro as "intimate, personal and filled with contemporary Hawaiian art ... (which) warmly reflects the attitude of a Marseillais at home in Hawaii." ...

HERE 'N' THERE: Comedian Frank DeLima is pau at Margarita's on Lewers Street — for the fall — but returns to the Mexican restaurant with Na Kolohe (Bobby Nishida and David Kauahikaua) for yule shows Dec. 10, 17 and 24. ...

Several Ballet Hawaii dancers "found" their way to "Lost," the hit ABC show filmed here. Dancers and their kinfolk landing on-camera roles include Natalie Schull, with mom Mari-Jo; Lillie Klemmer, with grandmother Sally Parker; Ester Beatty, with mom Darlene; Sabina Ocasio, with stepfather Carlos; plus Madison Moser, Gabby Chock and Maree Miller, who had dialogue — something not common in the ballet world. All troupers are "Nutcracker" veterans, gearing up for Dec. 16-18 shows at Blaisdell Concert Hall. ...

TIDBITS: Congrats to Erika Kauffman, new Halekulani public-relations director, who succeeds Joyce Matsumoto, who now lives in Las Vegas. Kaufman, most recently at Becker Communications, will oversee p.r. for Halekulani and sister hotel the Waikiki Parc. And Matsumoto has received some ink in a current Hemisphere article (about Honolulu, then and now) by travel writer David Butwin, ex-Honolulu Advertiser reporter, which we encountered on United flights to and from Pittsburgh recently. ...

Folks are still buzzing about the Loggins & Messina gig here, attended by 5,000. Everyone boogied when Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina burst into "Your Mama Don't Dance," time-traveling to those '70s days. Yvonne Elliman, Pauline Wilson, Kimo Kahoano, Jordan Segundo, Connie Gayle, Lynne Waters, Al Waterson and Nancy Bernal attended Emme Tomimbang's VIP backstage party. Loggins found time to enjoy the Ocean House's signature prime rib, too, with a group of Big Island pals, soaking up the beachfront vistas. ...
