RUSTON, La. —June Jones can become the fastest University of Hawai'i football coach to reach 50 victories in the all-college era if the Warriors beat Louisiana Tech today.

Jones, who is 49-33 in his seven seasons at UH, would hit the milestone one game earlier than Bob Wagner, who required 84 games, and Dick Tomey, who needed 85.

Wagner did it in 1993 and Tomey in 1984.

Tomey is UH's winningest coach with a 63-46-3 record between 1977 and 1986.

Tomey, the current coach at San Jose State, also is the winningest coach at Arizona.

ONE SIDE TO THE OTHER

Two years ago, Jeff Reinebold was the tight ends coach at Louisiana Tech and charged with installing some run-and-shoot routes in the Bulldogs' passing game.

Today, he is working with the Warriors' defensive line as a graduate assistant coach, trying to help stop the Bulldogs.

"I hope none of it comes back to bite us," Reinebold said.

"I watched that last UH game here (at Tech) with both pain and appreciation because of what (UH) did offensively," Reinebold said. The Warriors had 623 yards total offense in a 44-41 victory in Ruston in 2003.

Reinebold said Tech doesn't appear to be using many of the run-and-shoot routes anymore.

Reinebold gained much of his familiarity with the run-and-shoot while in the Canadian Football League where UH assistant Mouse Davis coached in the 1980s.

NOTES

  • Mindful of quarterback Colt Brennan's problem for throwing up and dehydration last week against Boise State, UH trainers and doctors are advising "all the players to be well hydrated, especially with the traveling involved in road games," said UH physician Dr. Andrew Nichols. Players have both water and an electrolyte solution available.

  • UH is an underdog on the Las Vegas betting lines for the fifth time this season. The Warriors are 3 1/2-point underdogs.

  • Today's game will be carried by ESPN Regional Television and shown in New Orleans and Honolulu as well as on ESPN Gameplan. It will be telecast live at 1 p.m. Hawai'i time on K5.
