Fujikawa loses in AJGA final, 5-3

Moanalua High freshman Tadd Fujikawa fell to Jamie Lovemark of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., 5 and 3, in the boys final of the AJGA Polo Junior Golf Classic yesterday at Sea Island, Ga.

Lovemark, a two-time Rolex Junior All-American, claimed his second invitational title at Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course.

Lovemark, a USC-bound junior, led 4-up through 11 holes by making birdie on No. 10 and capitalizing on a Fujikawa bogey on No. 11.

"It was a rough day for both of us," Lovemark said. "Pars were winning on most holes. This course is difficult and Tadd was a tough opponent."

In the girls final, Angela Park of Torrance, Calif., beat Mina Harigae of Monterey, Calif., 4 and 3.


BASKETBALL

UH-HILO WINS, 74-61

Justin Griffin scored 28 points, and Justin Dobson had 10 points and 11 rebounds as Hawai'i-Hilo (2-1) beat Western New Mexico (0-4), 74-61, last night at Hilo civic.

Griffin was 10 of 13 from the field, including 4 of 4 from 3-point range.

ESENE OFF TO GERMANY

University of Hawai'i-Hilo alum Osadonor "Skip" Esene will play for the NVV Lions Monchengladbach in the second German division.

Esene, a 6-foot-7 forward from Los Angeles, averaged 21.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game last season.

Esene was the Pacific West Conference Player of the Year and an NCAA Division II West Region selection.


VOLLEYBALL

UHH HITTER HONORED

Taina Savage, a junior outside hitter for the University of Hawai'i-Hilo, was selected to the 2005 AVCA All-Region Team.

The Tauranga, New Zealand, native was the Aspen Hotels Invitational MVP, a two-time Pacific West Conference Player of the Week and an NCAA Division II Pacific Region second-team selection.
