Cond้ Nast Traveler magazine's Business Travel Awards 2005 has ranked HAWAIIAN AIRLINES' premium-class meal service the best in the nation. This marks the second time in three years the other, 2003 that Hawaiian's first-class meal service has earned the travel magazine's highest ranking. The carrier's meals for first and coach class have been created, since 1999, by chef Beverly Gannon, co-founder of Hawai'i Regional Cuisine and owner of popular Maui restaurants Hali'imaile General Store and Joe's Bar & Grill. She meets with Hawaiian's kitchen staff in nine U.S. gateway cities regularly. Cond้ Nast's annual business travel awards are decided through a national survey, measuring seven major categories of the flight experience overall, Hawaiian's service was third-highest among premium- class carriers nationwide. In recognition of a video teleconferencing project that allowed, among other things, deployed soldiers to keep in touch with loved ones including watching their toddlers take their first steps a Schofield Barracks employee has been named STAFFING ASSOCIATE OF THE YEAR. The annual award is given by Westaff Inc., a temporary help and staffing firm. This year's award went to SCOTT DANIELS of Honolulu, a computer assistant at the Army Community Service at Schofield Barracks. Daniels' expertise helped design a video teleconferencing and e-mail system that allows families to remain in touch with loved ones in Iraq and Afghanistan. Westaff provides staffing services and employment opportunities for 150,000 temporary and permanent placement employees annually, in administration, call centers and light industry through more than 230 offices throughout the United States, Britain, Australia and New Zealand. The award coincided with the September observance of National Staffing Employee Week.
KAISER PERMANENTE HAWAI'I'S health plans including commercial (ranking 49th out of 257 plans), and Medicaid (second out of 58) and Medicare (19th out of 131) each placed highly in the U.S. News annual health plan "honor role report." Kaiser's three plans were ranked near the top in the state, and as three of the best in the nation. The managed-care Honor Role standings were compiled from data collected and analyzed by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, managed care's major accrediting body. Kaiser operates 17 outpatient clinics on O'ahu, Maui and the Big Island; with 390 physicians, 3,800 employees and 226,000 members statewide.
The Girl Scout Council of Hawai'i will bestow "Women of Distinction" honors Wednesday on CLAIRE ASAM, president and executive director, Queen Lili'uokalani Children's Center; dee jay mailer, chief executive officer, Kamehameha Schools; and COLLEEN WONG, vice president for legal affairs, Kamehameha Schools. The "Women of Distinction" recipients are selected by local councils and are awarded to women in the community who most best uphold Girl Scout values. The awards will be given at the council's annual Women of Distinction Dinner, 5:30 p.m. (reception and silent auction, followed by dinner) to 9 p.m., at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, Coral Ballrooms. A HUI HOU FUNERAL & TRIBUTE SERVICES, a female-owned Big Island funeral funeral home, has been named 2005 Employer of the Year by Hawai'i Business and Professional Women. The award recognizes success in an industry of few women funeral directors and even fewer women funeral home owners. The honor comes as the owners PENNY and CONNIE BRUM-BAUGH, and SUSAN GILLISPIE mark their first year in business. The trio has a combined total of about 30 years in the industry.
