Soccer tournament to benefit ailing 4-year-old

In an attempt to repay Mark Kane for decades of service to the soccer community, the sport's participants are coming together in support of his granddaughter, who has cancer.

Four-year-old Addie Fisette has pre-B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemi, and to raise money for her medical care and treatment, organizers came up with The Addie Fisette 3-v-3 Tournament.

The tournament is Dec. 10 at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex, and is open to players, male and female, from age 8 to over 50. Registration will be accepted up until the start of the tournament, which is 8 a.m.

There is no registration fee, but organizers are asking for donations.

"I thought it was a great idea," said Kane, coach of Castle High's girls varsity team and Hawai'i Pacific's women's club team. "It's nice that when you are in trouble, people help."

Kane also coached soccer at Saint Louis and football at Castle, where he was the school's athletic director. Addie is the daughter of Kane's daughter, Kealii, and Scott Fisette.

"We're so touched and overwhelmed, when they approached us about the idea," said Kealii Fisette, who found out about Addie's leukemia in late October.

"She calls it 'bugs in her blood,' " Kealii Fisette said. "The doctor thought it was a virus. She was in the hospital for nine days before they diagnosed her."

Addie is undergoing chemo-therapy treatment, and, "We're taking it a day at a time. This week she's really good because she's taking a break," Kealii Fisette said Monday.

She explained that factors including Addie's youth and because doctors caught the cancer early, give her a nearly 90 percent chance of being cured.

"There are a lot of kids who survived this and are graduating from college," Kane said.

Addie started playing soccer this season, joining AYSO after the Kane'ohe region allowed 4-year-olds to play.

"She got her uniform and we got to watch her play her first game," Kane said. "Hopefully, Addie will be out kicking next fall."

Kealii, who also plays soccer, said, "It's in the plans to get her back on the soccer field."

Organizers are also selling T-shirts for $10 (they will mail them for an additional $1).

Please make checks out to Addie Fisette, c/o Manuia Soccer Club, 3320 Herbert St., Ho-nolulu, HI 96815.
