Two stars of the popular ABC television series "Lost" were arrested early yesterday in Kailua on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Police arrested Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros within 15 minutes of each other at Kalaniana'ole Highway and Auloa Road. Watros was arrested at 12:05 a.m. and Rodriguez at 12:20 a.m., according to police records.

Rodriguez was booked under the name Mayte Michelle Rodriguez.

Police said officers pulled Rodriguez and Watros over after the women, driving separate cars, were seen weaving on Pali Highway. Both women failed field sobriety tests, police said.

The women were charged at the main police station with operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant and were released on $500 bail each. They will appear at a driver's license revocation hearing at Kane'ohe District Court at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 29, police records show.

Rodriguez, 27, and Watros, 37, could not be reached for comment yesterday. Publicists for "Lost" declined to comment and referred questions to the actresses' agents, who could not be reached for comment.

Rodriguez, who plays "Ana Lucia Cortez" on the show, gave police a Sunset Beach address. Watros, who plays "Libby," listed a Kailua address.

The arrests of the two have drawn national attention. Capt. Frank Fujii, Honolulu police spokesman, said he received a call from People magazine yesterday morning before local media were aware of the arrests.

But Fujii said he hopes the arrests won't send the wrong message to the public.

"The most important message here is don't drink and drive and I don't want that message to get lost," Fujii said. "The news is not who got arrested, the news is a reminder that we should not be drinking and driving and it's very timely with respect to the holiday season."

People arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant automatically have their driver's licenses revoked. They are given a temporary license that allows them to drive, but under several restrictions.

Yesterday's arrests were the second time that a cast member from "Lost" has made the police blotter. On Oct. 12, Josh Holloway and his wife were robbed at gunpoint by a masked man who broke into their Hawai'i Kai home.
