The history of tattoo art in Japanese culture is given some ink at "Undercover: the Secret World of Marked Men," an exhibition of woodblock prints (or ukiyo-e) now at the Honolulu Academy of Arts James A. Michener Gallery. Ukiyo-e artists in 19th century Japan explored the world of skin art by depicting actors in the roles of famous warriors. These heroes became the main subject matter of woodblock artists. But other ukiyo-e prints depicted the daily life of Japan's common people and the colorful goings on in city pleasure quarters.
